What is Green Taco Sauce?

Green taco sauce is a flavorful condiment made from a variety of ingredients such as tomatillos, jalapeños, garlic, onion, and cilantro. It’s a staple in Mexican cuisine and a perfect addition to any taco dish. The sauce is usually bright green in color and has a tangy and slightly spicy taste.

Why Make Your Own Green Taco Sauce?

There are many reasons to make your own green taco sauce instead of buying it from the store. Firstly, making your sauce at home allows you to customize the ingredients to your taste. You can adjust the heat, acidity, and saltiness of the sauce to suit your preference. Additionally, homemade sauces are usually fresher and healthier as you can avoid preservatives and additives found in store-bought sauces.

Ingredients Needed to Make Green Taco Sauce

  • 3 Large tomatillos
  • 1 Large jalapeno pepper
  • 1/4 Large white onion
  • 1-2 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 clove garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 15 stems of cilantro leaves
  • 1/2 small green bell pepper

How to Make Green Taco Sauce?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your green taco sauce recipe:

Step 1

Prepare the ingredients by washing the Tomatillos and Jalapenos thoroughly.

Step 2

Cut the Jalapeno in half, de-seed and de-vein it, and then boil it in a pan for approximately 7 minutes until it is soft. Remove the Jalapeno and place it on a baking sheet.

Step 3

Place the Tomatillos, Garlic with Peel On, Onion with skin on, and Bellpepper on the same baking sheet next to the Jalapeno.

Step 4

Turn the oven on broil and place the baking sheet on the middle rack. Cook all the ingredients until they have a nice char, turning the tomatillos over to char on all sides. The tomatillos are done when they are starting to lighten and turn a slight yellow color. Remove each ingredient as it gets done roasting, making sure not to burn the garlic.

Step 5

In a small bowl, smash the garlic to a paste, then add it to the blender with the rest of the roasted items. Peel the skins off the tomatillos when they are finished charring, then add them to the blender.

Step 6

Pulse the mixture in the blender until it is thick like a salsa. Add salt, cumin, to taste, and cilantro, then the vinegar, and pulse a few more times. Note that if you prefer a Green Taco Sauce, you can strain the seeds from the tomatillos and omit cilantro.
