In a medium-sized bowl, combine the ground chuck, black pepper, salt, and garlic onion salt, powder. Stir well to combine.
Round and flatten the meat mixture into four equal patties.
Make a medium-high fire in a cast-iron skillet.
Place the hamburger steaks in the heated skillet, being sure to not crowd them too much. For three to four minutes, cook.
Once the steaks are flipped, cook the other side for 3 to 4 minutes. Searing and browning the steaks are essential.
Set aside the steaks after removing them from the skillet.
Onion Gravy
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the onions until they are soft and browned about 5 to 6 minutes.
From the skillet, remove the onions.
The skillet needs more grease, so add a tablespoon or two of butter if it isn't enough. Add the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly to ensure the flour is evenly cooked.
Make a smooth gravy by adding the beef broth to the skillet.
After 2 minutes, reduce the heat to low. The onions can be added to the gravy or kept separate.
To Serve
Top the hamburger steaks with onions and gravy and serve.
